The aim of this programme is to provide a learning pathway for learners who wish to contribute to community health in New Zealand and require a programme of study that contextualises English Language learning in the context of academic health care English.

Graduates will benefit by gaining transferable knowledge and behavioural attributes valued in the complementary health sector. This programme has an educational pathway to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4)  [Ref: 1883]; and the New Zealand Certificate in Chinese Medicine for Health Maintenance (Level 4) [Ref: 2982]: 

Content:

  • English Academic Reading within a healthcare context
  • English Academic Writing within a healthcare context
  • English Academic Speaking within a healthcare context
  • English Academic Listening within a healthcare context 

Outcomes: 

A Graduate of this qualification will be able to:
       * Understand main points and some specific details of moderately complex oral
          texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context.
       * Participate with some confidence in sustained spoken discourse on reasonably
         familiar topics relevant to the applied context.
       * Understand main points and some specific details of moderately complex written
         texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied context.
       * Write clear connected texts on reasonably familiar topics relevant to the applied
         context.

Entry Criteria:

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years of age,

Domestic Student Academic Entry Criteria: –  NCEA Level 2 – at least 60 credits; preference includes health credits, or equivalent.

International Students English Language Criteria: – Applicants must be able to communicate competently in English.

International Students or residents whose first language is neither English nor Maori must have a minimum overall IELTS score of 5 with no band lower than 5.0; NZCEL Level 2 or
equivalent evidence of English language proficiency as prescribed by Rule 18.
