Qualified graduates will possess the following competencies:

Qualified graduates will be able to apply knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, including its roles in movement, support, stability, and mobility, and integrate this understanding with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory and practice in professional clinical settings.

They will demonstrate the ability to apply biological, physical, and chemical principles, integrating them with TCM theory and practice in relevant clinical environments.

Graduates will communicate and integrate knowledge about the historical development, philosophy, and concepts of TCM, including its functions, dysfunctions, prevention, and treatment principles, enabling practitioners to effectively apply this knowledge within New Zealand’s healthcare system.

They will be able to communicate with patients under New Zealand’s healthcare regulations, using TCM philosophy and techniques to educate patients on health maintenance, improving lifestyle, diet, and overall physical well-being.

They will possess the skills to accurately apply the meridian and acupoint systems to perform safe and effective treatments using traditional tuina massage techniques.

Graduates will have knowledge of common diseases and systemic dysfunctions prevalent in New Zealand and will be able to apply Western medical examination procedures and laboratory diagnostics in clinical assessments, including understanding laboratory tests, radiological imaging processes, major medications, and mainstream physical therapies.

They will demonstrate the ability to apply physical diagnostic skills to common orthopedic conditions, using tuina theory and techniques for diagnosis, differentiation, and clinical management.

Graduates will integrate knowledge of tuina techniques and the pathology of common diseases to diagnose, differentiate, and manage both internal and orthopedic conditions in New Zealand, while maintaining professional and ethical communication, obtaining informed consent, and making referrals where necessary.

They will describe and critically evaluate tuina research within ethical frameworks, staying updated on advances in the field and applying them appropriately in clinical practice.

Graduates will collect clinical data using the four diagnostic methods of TCM, record and analyze information to identify syndromes, and establish and maintain comprehensive patient health records.

They will effectively apply tuina techniques, understanding their indications and contraindications, and modify treatment plans as needed to ensure safe and effective care.

Graduates will assume responsibility for patient care within New Zealand’s legislative framework, respecting the rights of patients and their families while maintaining ethical standards.

They will demonstrate a commitment to improving patients’ quality of life and contributing to the well-being of their communities, practicing professionally within legal and safety frameworks and operating economically viable practices as tuina practitioners.
